subnetting.

Hi Friends,

I am pretty difficulty on subnetting.

There is one task from my manager i.e., he gave one IP 10.10.2.30/29 and asked in that how many hosts available and what is the subnetmask.

As my knowledge the subnetmask is 255.255.255.248 am i right.

Can any body help me and how we can define.

Yes /29 = 255.255.255.248

256 - 248 = 8 so your subnets increment by 8.

So

10.10.2.0 255.255.255.248 is first subnet. Then

10.10.2.8/29

10.10.2.16/29

10.10.2.24/29 - this is the subnet you are interested in.

10.10.2.32 is the next subnet address.

Each subnet has to have a broadcast address so

10.10.2.24 = subnet address

10.10.2.31 = broadcast address

10.10.2.25 -> 10.10.2.30 are your useable host addresses.

yes , this is the correct mask.

there are different ways to work out numver of hosts.

u could do it this way :

248 ==> (256-248)=8

8 - 2=6( remove 2 for Subnet and Broadcast ) , so you are left with 6 hosts.

subnet 10.10.2.24

Hosts [10.10.2.25-30]

Broadcast 10.10.2.31

Just maths, u can use it to extract what is called "Magic Number" sometimes.

255.255.255.128 ==> 256-128=128

255.255.255.192 ==> 256-192=64

255.255.255.228 ==> 256-228=32

etc..
