The difference is the hardware architecture made in sup II to support only CatOS and in sup IV the hardware architecture is designed to support Cisco IOS and CatOS as well.

Sup 2 is layer 2 only (catos), sup 4 is a layer2/3 switch (IOS) .

If Microsoft took over Apple, windows xp would probably not fit straight onto macs, there may have to be a hard where revision before windows xp would run on a Mac.
The same case with catos and ios, cisco bought out the company that orignally created and made the Cats, when they bought them out they badged them with Cisco colours but they did not change the OS. Our new 650 Cats run IOS now.
Hope that helps

Hi Manoj,
the basi cdiffrence between CatOS and the IOS is the CLI commands that your run. In CatOS, the commands are " Set " based for example " Set module 3/4 enable ". In IOS the commnads are not the set based and as the usual Cisco IOS commands like "interface fa 3/4 "
