SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic number

I have two WS-X6K-2SU-MSFC2 both with 256megs of RAM

These cards are identical in every way (that I know) except for one have a bootstrap verison 6.1(4) and the other have verison 7.1(1)

I have two 64 meg flash cards loaded with s222-advipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF17b.bin

When I slide the SUP2 card in with the bootstrap verison 7.1(1), it boots fine from either flashcard.

When install the SUP2 card with the bootstrap verison 6.1(4), it does not boot from slot0: but I get the following error:

System Bootstrap, Version 6.1(4)

Copyright (c) 1994-2001 by cisco Systems, Inc.

c6k_sup2 processor with 262144 Kbytes of main memory

Autoboot excuting command: "boot slot0:/s222-advipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF17b.bin"

PCMCIA slot0 device is not intialized

open: read error...requested 0x4 bytes, got 0x0

trouble reading device magic number

loadprog: error on file open

boot cannot load "boot slot0:/s222-advipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF17b.bin"

The switch goes into a endless loop.

I am able break out of it with a control-break which drops me into ROMMON.

From ROMMON I can boot the switch from a really old IOS image that is stored on the bootflash:

When booted into this older IOS, I can perform a dir in disk0: and the new IOS iamge is there, happy has can be.

I have reformating the the flashcard and tftped the 50ish meg file on the flashcard.

No joy on booting.

I've read some places about a different formats on the flashcard, but the only place I know to format the card is in IOS

The only differences that I can tell are the bootstrap verison.

Help me understand what I am missing and kindly educate me to what I need to correct.

Suggestions, comments, opinons and flames are welcome!

Apologies Brian i should have been more specific.

I meant the part number for the memory cards.

If i remember a "sh ver" should show you the memory cards in use.

Re: SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic n

The internal flash is used to for storing the IOS and other files so i don't think that is the issue.

I think the problem you are facing is the one you identified in your original post but i was trying to confirm it. From the 6000 release notes -

Supervisor Engine 2 ROMMON software release 7.1(1) introduces support for the MEM-C6K-ATA-1-64M= (64MB) PCMCIA ATA FlashDisk device

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/hardware/Config_Notes/78_13488.html

So i think you need to upgrade your ROMMON code ie. your working switch has the right version but your non working switch does not.

I really doubt that it would work but have you tried booting from disk0 ?

The instructions as to how to do it are in the link i posted.

Make sure you read it all through before trying the upgrade.

Jon

Re: SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic n

"upgrade rom-monitor slot 1 rp file [...]c6msfc2-rm2.srec.122-17r.S1" updated the MSFC2 (the route processor).  In order to update the ROMMON of the SUP itself to 7.1(1) you need to "upgrade rom-monitor slot 1 sp file [...]cat6000-sup2-rm2.7-1-1.srec"

And, since the MSFC ROMMON came up, the latest version is 122-17r.S5 - release notes here:

No need for flames

Do you know the part number for your cards ?

SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic numbe

Thank you Jon for your reply and your kindness.

I do not know the exact part numbers for these two SUP2 cards.

I know the model number and the serial numbers for both the SUP2 card and the MSFC daughter card.

Show Module provides the same information.

There are a bunch numbers on these cards/daughter cards and I have no idea whice one is a part number.

What does a part number look like?

What would they start with?

What are they normally found?

Thank you

SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic numbe

AH HA!   I see that the card the does not boot only has 16megs of internal flash and the working until has 32megs of internal flash.

How does that make a different when I am booting from a 64meg flashcard?

Hall of Fame Super Blue

Re: SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic n

The internal flash is used to for storing the IOS and other files so i don't think that is the issue.

Re: SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic n

This where I need some help, as I have never upgraded ROMMON software before.

I have downloaded the only ROMMON software for this card, c6msfc2-rm2.srec.122-17r.S5

When I am booted back into the SUP2 card that needs updated, what commands do I issue?

Re: SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic n

Thank you Jon for your help, but I am having no joy today.

I thoroughly read the PDF document titled:

Release Notes for Catalyst 6000 Family and Cisco 7600 Series Internet Router

     Supervisor Engine 2 ROMMON

All went well until the flashing process

Here is the output of my experience:

Router#sh rom-monitor slot 1 rp

Region F1: APPROVED, preferred

Region F2: APPROVED

Currently running ROMMON from F1 region

Router#upgrade rom-monitor slot 1 rp file tftp://10.72.2.200/c6msfc2-rm2.srec.122-17r.S1

Router#

I did not see the following that I was expected to see:

ROMMON image upgrade in progress

    Erasing flash

    Programming flash

    Verifying new image

    ROMMON image upgrade complete

The card must be reset for this to take effect

I reloaded switch and I saw the same old thing:

System Bootstrap, Version 6.1(4)

c6k_sup2 processor with 262144 Kbytes of main memory

I was hoping for 7.1(1)

However the ROM: System Bootstrap seems to have a newer version number, from 12.1 to now, 12.2(17r)S5

(which the verison the file I uploaded to the switch)

Here is my sh ver from after the upgrade

Re: SUP2 issues booting to slot0: trouble reading device magic n

Thank you!   That was the tip I was seeking.

I got my RP and SP mixed up

All is well and my problem has been solved.

I am able to boot to the 64meg flashcard and load the latest IOS image.

Thank all of you for your generosity.
