Cisco:

We upgraded one of our layer 3 switch.

Dual sup slot 5 and 6. Basically, we upgraded the IOS by copying the IOS to sup-bootflash and changing the boot param. My question is, is there anything special we have to do to get the standby sup or does it sync auto?

thanks so much

Hello!

You donot have to do anything else for the standby sup. It should automatically sync and come up in SSO mode.

But the image has to be present in the same flash even on the standby. i.e. when you copy the new image to sup-bootflash/disk0 of the active sup, you also have to copy the same image to the corresponding sup-bootflash/disk0 of the standby too.

"Router# copy sup-bootflash: slavesup-bootflash:"

the "slave" prefix to bootflash/disk etc. will refer to the corrosponding storage on the standby. Remember that all the storages are independent on each of the Sups and when reloading, each SUP loads from its own flash. So the same image has to be present in each of them.

In your case, probably you have not copied the image in the sup bootflash of the standby, and so it might be stuck in rommon> . You could copy the same image to a flash disk (disk0:) in the active and physically insert it in the disk0: slot on the standby. Then you can manually boot that image from the disk0: using the nonactive sup console :

Rommon> boot disk0:

Once the standby boots up, you can then copy the image to the slaveSup-bootflash: so that the sup boots up fine next time.

Hope this helps.
