Supervisor Engine

What happens if the supervisor engine fails. Will the switch be able to do normal switching activites apart from routing.

Re: Supervisor Engine

Hi

Which switch are you referring to. The supervisor engine in the 4500/6500 switches are what drives the linecards. Without the Supervisor your switch is in effect dead.

On the 6500 there is a daughter card called the MSFC which is responsible for some L3 functions. This could fail and the switch would still switch.

Re: Supervisor Engine

Also, if you have redundant supervisors, your box will fail over to the other supervisor which can take various amounts of time depending on what hardware you have, failover mode configured, and so on.

What platform and supervisor are you asking about?
