supervisory engine types, catos,Ios

hi everybody!

I was reading the manual on cisco catalyst 6500 series switches.

One chapter in the manual deals with the supported supervisory engines

My question is which supervisor engine uses cat or Ios or both.

I don't find any clue in the manual

except that :

supervisor engine 2

version: ws-x6k-s2-pfc2 use Catos not ios.

So I don't know if other supervisor engines and their respective versions use Catos or Ios or both.

Any help or link will be greatly appreciated.

The 2 supervisors that you can purchase now are Sup32 and Sup720. You can use them in either hybrid or native mode.

Hybrid mode = CatOS on the supervisor

IOS on the MSFC

Native = IOS on both.

A. The Supervisor Engine 720 supports Cisco IOS starting 12.2(14)SX and Cisco Catalyst OS starting 8.1.

According to the link Edison forwarded,sup 720 versions:

vs-s720-10G-3c,vs-s720-10G-3cxL run only ios.

The SUP2, SUP32, and SUP720 can run either hybrid (CATos and IOS on the MSFC if one is installed) or Native IOS. I'm not too sure if the SUP1 is capable of running native IOS.

In cat 6500 all supervisors can run hybrid (catos in the supervisor and IOS in the MSFC) or Native (IOS in the supervisor and MSFC) By default sup 1 and 2 run Hybrid and sup 720 runs Native but there is a process to convert from Hybrid to Native and viceversa.

Careful with that statement. Sup720-10G-3C can't run hybrid.

Apologies for the misleading information. I should know better having spent half my networking like using 6500 switches !!

All versions of Supervisor 2 support both native and hybrid.

I too must apologize. I was unaware that the Sup720-10G-3C did not support CATos.

All 6500 Supervisor II modules support hybrid configuration with the exception of WS-X6K-S2-PFC2 (only supports CatOS due to its lack of MSFC).
