Switch for Server Farm

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which switch to utilize for a small server farm.  Only requirements is that it be Cisco, support twisted pair 10 / 100/ 1000 and have the capability of fiber uplinks.  The twisted pair ports do not need to be more than 8 or 12. THe FIber uplinks should have two 1000mps ports at a minimum and be compatible with WS-G5486 GBIC on a Cisco 3548.

Re: Switch for Server Farm

Hi Mark,

If you do not require stacking the 3560 in a good choice. A 24 port 3560 gives you 24 port copper 10/100/1000 and 4 1Gig SFPs for your uplinks

part number :

WS-C3560G-24TS-E

Here is the data sheet:

That looks good.  I haven't checked, but is there a switch that has a smaller count for twisted pair ports.  I'll never utilize all 24 ports.  I was looking for somethig with 8 or 12 ports.  the 4 Fiber ports would be more than enough.

Re: Switch for Server Farm

Mark,

There is 3560 with 8 port 10/100 (POE) and one SFP for uplink.  I think there is also a 12 port 10/100 in the data sheet

Re: Switch for Server Farm

If you require Layer 2 only then Catalyst 2350 is a likely candidate.  It's got the same forwarding rate performance as the 3750 and it supports 10Gb.  The 10Gb can be converted to 4x1Gb.

If you require Layer 3 then I side with Reza.

Re: Switch for Server Farm

Thanks guys,  8 ports will be enough, but the twisted pair ports need to also support 1000.  Do not need the layer 3, layer 2 is just fine  All I'm needing to do is get all of the servers running at 1000mps, bring it over to the work group switch 3548 and supply it with 1000.  Then the work stations that are on the 10 / 100 ports will have the ability to access each of the servers with a wider band width while others are also accessing at the wider bandwidth.  I check into that 2350 series and see if it meets the specs I need.

Re: Switch for Server Farm

A WS-C3548XL-EN???  This model is end-of-sale since 2005 and should be end-of-support.
