Switch stack question for c3750x and c3750

Hi guys,

Need some advice on stacking of switches. Currently I have this stack which is working fine.

     1 52    WS-C3750-48P          12.2(55)SE1           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

     2 52    WS-C3750-48P          12.2(55)SE1           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

     3 52    WS-C3750-48P          12.2(55)SE1           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

     4 52    WS-C3750-48P          12.2(55)SE1           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

*    5 52    WS-C3750V2-48PS    12.2(55)SE1           C3750-IPBASEK9-M

I have a WS-C3750X-48PF-S, can this be included in the stack above as member 6?

Switch stack question for c3750x and c3750

I have a WS-C3750X-48PF-S, can this be included in the stack above as member 6?

No.

You need to upgrade your existing stack to 12.2(55)SE7 or 12.2(55)SE8 first.

Next you need to ensure your WS-C3750X-48PF-S is running the same IOS as the rest of your stack before you can join it to the stack.

You also need to make sure the stack and the new switch have the same license installed.

Switch stack question for c3750x and c3750

Can I downgrade the new switch to 12.2(55)SE1 instead? Will that work?

Nope.  Won't work.  You will NOT be able to find 12.2(55)SE1 for the exact model of your switch.

Count yourself lucky.  When the 3750X-24S came out, the first IOS to support this was the very buggy 12.2(58)SE2.  And not a lot of people know that you can't stack a 3750X-24S with legacy 3750 with 16 mb flash.  It was just recent that the switching BU were forced to knock up an IOS for the 3750 with only 16 mb flash.  The support for the 3750X-24S started with IOS version 12.2(55)SE7.

Your 3750X is running the same license as the rest of your stack.  If you can upgrade the rest of your stack to 12.2(55)SE8 and upgrade the 3750X to 12.2(55)SE8 then you can stack them together.

IMPORTANT:  When you stack a new switch to an existing stack, make sure you POWER OFF THE NEW SWITCH before connecting the stacking cable.  If you do not power off the new switch and connect the stacking cable, your entire switch stack will reboot.

So the existing stack will be upgraded with c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin

And the new 3750x should be with c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin correct?

This is correct.

Thanks Leo.

My current stack shows this when checking license:

sw01#sh lic

% License not supported on this device

Can I downgrade the new switch to 12.2(55)SE1 instead? Will that work?

Upgrading the current stack seems to be a big job.

This is the new switch's info:

Re: Switch stack question for c3750x and c3750

Leo, one more thing.

So the existing stack will be upgraded with c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin

And the new 3750x should be with c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE8.bin correct?

Or should it be the same IOS as well?

I noticed they are different since different models.
