Switching design

Hello,

I have some questions about routing and switching design.

I have old Cisco network (Catalyst 4006, ...)

With several end point connected with fiber .

Today i have some network loop (spanning tree is in use).

I have some questions about change in my network.

1) Is it better to change the Catalyst 4006 with 4700 serie, or install 3750 Catalyst switch (using Stackwise techno). ?

2) Is it better to use Etherchannel to secure fiber link rather than spanning tree loop ?

3) To secure my gateway is it possible to use HSRP with 3750. I have one gateway per vlans (10 Vlans).

Thanks for your recommandations

Re: Switching design

1) Since you have a 4006, the 4500 switch seems the most logical path.

Are you planning on upgrading to VoIP ?

If so, the 3750 prices are more competitive. Either choice depends on the switch usage.

4500 Series is intended as a distribution switch while the 3750 is intended as an access switch.

2) Etherchannel is bundling 2 or more links into one logical channel, it does not prevent spanning-tree loops.

3) Yes, you can use HSRP with the 3750 but keep in mind, with the stacked cable, a group of physical switches will be shown as a single switch in the CLI. In order to HSRP between 3750s, you need to have 2 stacks or 2 single switches.
