Switching: Packets Per Second

Often see the stat "xyz switch switches 38 mpps". Can we determine the amount of pps a switch is actually pumping through? In my office, where not everyone is Cisco-friendly they often throw up this stat.

Re: Switching: Packets Per Second

If you're looking for a Cisco switch to indicates its current instantaneous pps rate, I'm unaware of such a stat. If you want a switch's average pps rate over some time period, and if interfaces provide packet counters, you could take the deltas of the interface packet counts for a time period and divide that down into pps. (You would need all interfaces packet in or packet out counts.)

If you have a 6500 switch, the 'show mls statistics' will provide this information.
