Switchport difference

What is the difference between

interface FastEthernetx/x

no ip address

speed 10

duplex full

spanning-tree cost 3100

and

interface FastEthernet7/26

switchport

no ip address

speed 10

duplex full

spanning-tree cost 3100

The first one does not have switchport in the config and the second one has.

Please what is the difference?

Thanks

Re: Switchport difference

I am not sure what switch model that you're using, basically "switchport" command configures that the particular port as a Layer 2 port.

You can read more about it from this link

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/67.html#tbl-2

Re: Switchport difference

Hi,

The difference is simple .Both the ports are capable of acting as a l2 as well as l3 port.

The first one is a L3 port .

The second one is converted L2 port from a L3 port.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps368/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008007e6a5.html#wp1041189

Hope this helps

Re: Switchport difference

comment --> the first one is a L3 port.

if he got the output from a router then it's a L3 port but if he got the output from a switch then it's a L2 port

Re: Switchport difference

Thank you very much.

Does this mean if I omit the swithcport command, I can give the interface an ip addresses?

Thanks

Re: Switchport difference

if it's a switch and you command "no switchport" you could put in an ip address and when you do sh run you would see on the int the "no switchport" statement

Re: Switchport difference

Hi

No all the ports will be L2 on the switches except 6500 series.it would be better if u let us know the platfrom which u r using.

Thanks
