2009 Oct 06 08:58:05 EDS +11:00 %SYS-3-FAB_SYNCERR:SYNC ERROR detected on fabric channel 5 from module 5

Thie above error makes me suspect the SUP module in slot 5 may have had a problem, but the actual module that got reset is the SUP module in slot 6.

Should I replace the SUP720 ( in slot 5 or 6 ) just on once occurence of this problem.

According to the Messages and Recovery Manual at the following link, we really should be able to ignore this error if the recovery is successful.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/catos/7.x/system/messages/emsg.html

See more information in attached file called SUP720.doc.

Please say is the module in slot 5 or 6 the suspect.

These message indicates that there was a channel sync error from the fabric perspective to the channel end point of the supervisor side.

This is backgroud channel error checking code which checks for channel sync perodically and recovers if there is a sync error.

You need to worry about this error msg only when the sync recovery is not able to recover from this error (in which case, the fabric module may be shutdown, if the sync error is to the supervisor).

Most likely you have a flaky connection to the backplane. Could we try reseating the Supervisor & the fabric module firmly and monitor.

Which SP720 - module in slot 5 or module in slot 6 is the suspect in case many of these same events occur.
