I know the most common cause of these errors is a physical layer problem.

My question is...

Which port is this refering to as the switch in question only has 8 gigabit ports. 2 on mod 1 (WS-X4013) & 8 on mod 2 (WS-X4306).

I have seen the same error message my understanding is that the number is an internal number not directly related to port numbering as you noted.
