Hi all when my pc communicates wih a server, say web etc, I know it uses a random dynamic port to talk to a well known/registered port on the server, I know also that the server will use its source port as the same as the destination port from the client and destination as the clients source port, but sometimes can the server use a random source port ? or would this have to be part of a new connection ?

Your are correct, If a session is created TO the server from a client, the source port the servers uses will be the same port the client used as a destination port.

Only when the server initiates a connection will the source port be dynamic in the port range of 1024-65535
