Threshold_Violation error messages

Hi guys,

I recently noticed company core switch cisco 4507 generating the below error messages from the 10gig module.

*Jan 28 22:16:10.752: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te3/2: Rx  power low alarm; Operating value: -12.7 dBm, Threshold value: -12.4 dBm.

*Jan 28 22:16:03.004: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te7/2: Rx  power low warning; Operating value: -10.4 dBm, Threshold value:  -8.4  dBm.

Interface ten3/2 is interconnecting another 4507 within the same network cabinet.

Interface ten7/2 is interconnecting a different site distribution switch that is 400meters away.

Anyone who can assist.???

Tarun,

What is the SFP model.

Issue the following commnds:

sh int ten3/2 transceiver detail

sh int ten7/2 transceiver detail

sh idprom int ten3/2

sh idprom int ten7/2

Show interface ten3/2 transceiver threshold violations

Show interface ten7/2 transceiver threshold violations

This error message denotes that both the ends are recieving less power than the minimum operating value.

Thanks

Ankur

the sfp's are

10GBase-LRM for all the interfaces with errors messages.

Tarun,

The reason you are getting the Low power alarms on these interfaces is that

10GBase-LRM Module supports link lengths of 300m on standard single-mode fiber and supports link lengths of 220m on standard Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) grade multimode fiber (MMF) However you are using it over a distance of 400m.

You need to change the SFP to the one which supports a distance of 400m like SFP-10G-LR for single mode.

Hi Ankur and thanks for the feedback.

One question, what impact does the error messages am getting have on my link connecting to the core switch?. Will the quality of the link be affceted.?

Tarun,

Yes indeed the quality of link is affected and there might be loss of data packets. You might also see input errors and CRC on that interface where link is connected.

Thanks

Ankur

Hi Ankur,

I changed the patchcord connecting core 1 and 2 which are in the  same room and within the same network cabinet but the threshold  violation error messages still appear on that interface. Ten 3/2

Below is the output of the various show commands for this interface.Hope it helps

Tarun,

The fibre that you are using, is it Multi mode or Single mode?

Thanks

Ankur

Ankur,

the fiber patch cord i am using is multimode.

Tarun,

With Multimode you will need the Mode Conditioning Patch (MCP) cable when using 10GBase-LRM.

Are you using it? if not, you should use it.

Hi Ankur,

Does cisco have any software that helps in deploying configurations on multiple switches or routers over the network.?

How can i acquire it or purchase and what is it called.Does the software also deploy configurations on non-cisco devices?

Hi Ankur,

kindly assist with the below issue. i will appreciate.

we have some new cisco air cap1602e e k9 access points and they are not working with the wlan controller 2504-k9.

the controller is running ios Software Version 7.2.115.1 .looking at various blogs they  to upgrade our ios version but am wondering how to go about it .can you just upgrade to latest or is there a way to upgrade.

Below are the error messages from the AP.
