CiscoWorks Resource Manager Essentials has a config archive utility which can automatically backup the startup & running config of numerous device types and vlan.dat if applicable.
It can use either snmp (RO/RW) or telnet/ssh to do this config backup.

Thanks Davis,
do you know of any free tools besides Cisco Works as we do not want to incur any costs ?
Thanks again.

Hi,
we use NEDI. We use it for tracking config changes and syslog / snmp stuff. It keeps a track of all your configs in a mysql db also.
There is a free vmware application for it if you want to try it out quickly,

RANCID may also be worth a look. This stores configs for multiple devices in a CVS repository allowing you to view the changes over time. It can also email notify on changes.
