Too warm in the computer room?

Hello,

I find that our computer room is quite warm but I am not sure the temperature is suitable for our equipement. I ran a "sh env temp" on our catalyst 6500, but I can't quite now how to interpret these values. Documents I found show the operational temp for a cat6500 is between 0 and 40C, but which of the values in the sh env will tell me the if the temperature is OK or not:

Hi, you can set the green and yellow thresholds on your switch env, you can check the status with "show env temperature status" command it will tell you if the temp is too high or too low. have a look at the Cisco document below it should be helpful. HTH

Usage Guidelines

On a Cisco ME switch, you can use the show env temperature command to display the switch temperature status. The command output shows the green and yellow states as OK and the red state as FAULTY. If you enter the show env temperature status command on this switch, the temperature information is the same as the show env all command output.

You can use the system env temperature threshold yellow global configuration command to configure the yellow temperature threshold. If not configured, the yellow threshold defaults to 10 degrees Celsius below the red threshold.

Expressions are case sensitive. For example, if you enter | exclude output, the lines that contain output are not displayed, but the lines that contain Output are displayed.

Examples

Displays for the Cisco ME 3400G-12CS switch are different than those for other Cisco ME switches. This is an example of output from the show env all command for the Cisco ME 3400G-12CS switch:

Switch> show env all

FAN 1 is OK

FAN 2 is OK

TEMPERATURE is OK

Temperature Value: 31 Degree Celsius

Temperature State: GREEN

Yellow Threshold : 56 Degree Celsius

The inlet temperatures of the modules are an indication of the temp of the air beeing drawn into the Catalyst. Your switch seem to be drawing air that is around 28C, which is above the industry general recommended range for a computer room. In the long run this might affect the lifetime of your equipment.

Check if your room is colder than the inlet temps, and improve airflow into the switch if you can.
