Does VTP require that a switch-to-switch link is configured as a trunk link rather than an access link ? Or can it send its advertisements over an access (non-trunk) link ?
And how about Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) ? Does it require a trunk between two switches before it can transmit the BPDU frames between them ?

I would recommend that if you want to pass vlans in between switches to, yes, use trunk links. This is a good design practice and everything will function correctly if done this way (VTP, STP, etc).
Also, don't forget to configure the root bridge properly for each vlan used.

VTP requires a trunk to pass it's information along.

STP does not require a trunk.
