A post in this discussion says
they will be sending the packets directly to the router, and the switch will not be involved. Whether the switch is in L2 or L3 mode does not matter.
That is not true. It does matter. Even if the host has the router as its default gateway when it sends an IP packet it will pass through the switch. And if the switch has routing enabled then the switch will evaluate the destination address and will make its own routing decision, which potentially could be different from the router decision.
