understanding VTP messages

Any link or document for understanding VTP messages ?

Other than this:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk689/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094c52.shtml

And also can some tell me what are the exact fields in an 'Advertisement request' ?'

Chand

Re: understanding VTP messages

Hi Chandu,

there was a nice summary at javvin.com, but unfortunately this page is down by now.

I found an archive, hope the link works: http://archive.is/MwKfa

I've attached a Wireshark capture of an Advertisement Request; I think the fields are self-explaining, with the exception of the "Start Value":

"This is used in cases in which there are several subset advertisements. If the first (n) subset advertisement has been received and the subsequent one (n+1) has not been received, the Catalyst only requests advertisements from the (n+1)th one."

If you want to discover some more details than those provided by the document you linked, you can search for "US Patent 6304901" ("Multiple VLAN architecture system").

"The start value is used in the event that the LAN-switch does not desire all VLANs to be advertised to it.

(...) The start value indicates from which VLAN ID to start; all VLANs which precede the start value are not advertised. If the start value is zero, all VLANs are advertised.".
