Update timer synchronization

With routing protocols such as rip, igrp etc, why is it necessary to prevent route table update timers from synchronizing by introducing a random jitter time? Is it due to less bandwith consuption?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Update timer synchronization

Hi Onur,

IOS uses these random jitter variables to avoid multiple routers on the same segment synchronizing their periodic updates which would cause big spikes in instantaneous link utilizations.

RIP jitter is 15%, IGRP jitter is 20%.
