I have done a basic guide for restoring config for other people in my business, can anyone sanity check this for me to make sure its ok or missing anything? it is for a Cat 6509-e with dual sup 720 sups
- Power system completely off, turn off both power supplies
- Unscrew and slide out card number 5 but not completely
- Switch power supplies back on
- Plug in cisco blue console cable into supervisor console port
- Open hyperterminal from laptop, settings should be as follows, 9600, 8 none, 1, none
- You will then see the system booting, note the current status of the system, once loaded up it should bring you to a prompt i.e >cr1-ac: , and the green light should show active on the supervisor card. This should take around 2-3 mins
- If device does not load, switch power supplies off, slide card 6 out and card 5 back in and repeat process, if backup supervisor does not also boot then follow next step.
- If system has failed to boot, it will bring you to a prompt as follows
- Rommon 1>
- If it does not go into the Rommon prompt, repower the switch and press the Break key to force the switch into the Rommon 1> prompt
- Type confreg 0x2102 then press enter
- To make sure there is a valid IOS to load from, type dir sup-bootflash:
- You should see a file called s72033-ipbasek9-mz.122-33.SXI4a.bin , if not found then the file is missing from the file system, in which case a backup copy of the IOS is located on the compact flash card. However the system should normally boot from the sup-bootflash.
- You can verify this by typing dir disk0: , then check to see if the image is there.
- Depending where the image is located type either of the following commands to load the switch
- boot sup-bootflash:s72033-ipbasek9-mz.122-33.SXI4a.bin
or
- boot disk0:s72033-ipbasek9-mz.122-33.SXI4a.bin
- Then this should boot the system
- Once loaded you should then get the prompt cr1-ac>
- If the prompt says switch> then the configuration file has not been loaded, this is basically the configuration on the whole switch.
- You will need to tell the switch to boot from the correct config by typing the following
- Type en then press enter
- Type dir disk0:
- Look for the config file with the latest date, it will look like the following

- Type configure replace disk0:config031110 then press enter (this must be the lastest file)
- Type copy run start then press enter
- Then type reload then press enter
- This will then load the config from the compact flash card and the system should boot normally.
- Ping all IP addresses, system should now be live
