Urgent - Which DRAM do I need?

I need some help and clarification on this issue. I am in the process of upgrading the IOS on a

Switch from Upgrading of the IOS from c6sup22-psv-mz.121-19.E1a.bin to 12.2(18)SXD7b c6k222-ps-mz.12.2-18.SXD7b.

The show version gives the following

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.1(11r)E1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

BOOTLDR: c6sup2_rp Software (c6sup2_rp-PSV-M), Version 12.1(19)E1a, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

uptime is 4 days, 13 hours, 18 minutes

Time since switched to active is 4 days, 13 hours, 12 minutes

System returned to ROM by power-on (SP by power-on)

System restarted at 02:59:58 BST Sun Oct 19 2008

System image file is "sup-bootflash:c6sup22-psv-mz.121-19.E1a.bin"

cisco WS-C6509 (R7000) processor (revision 3.0) with 112640K/18432K bytes of memory.

Processor board ID SAL0720D9PF

R7000 CPU at 300Mhz, Implementation 39, Rev 3.3, 256KB L2, 1024KB L3 Cache

Last reset from power-on

X.25 software, Version 3.0.0.

Bridging software.

1 Virtual Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)

288 FastEthernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)

4 Gigabit Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)

381K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.

32768K bytes of Flash internal SIMM (Sector size 512K).

Standby is up

Standby has 112640K/18432K bytes of memory.

Configuration register is 0x2102

Is this enough for the upgrade?

The Cisco Websites says I need the following for the upgrade

IP

c6k222-psv-mz.122-18.SXD7b.bin

Release Date: 12/Dec/2006

IP

Size: 37385.21 KB (38282452 bytes)

Minimum Memory: DRAM:256 MB Flash:64 MB

Do I have enough DRAM and if I dont what do I need?

Thanks

Hi, you do no have the DRAM required, you currently have 128 Megs shown in the show version output of 112640K/18432K bytes of memory

You need 256 DRAM

here is memory tables for various platforms

So which one do I purchase

MEM-MSFC2-512M or MEM-S2-512M.

We have a Supervisor 2 / MSFC 2 card running native IOS.

If I do a remote switch command on the same show version I get the folloiwng

Re: Urgent - Which DRAM do I need?

Thank you. I got this email from Cisco.

..........It looks to me like you were trying to install sup memory instead of MSFC memory. MEM-S2-512MB is memory for the supervisor and MEM-MSFC2-512MB= is the memory for the MSFC. They aren't interchangeable. Here's a link regarding the MSFC memory installation.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/hardware/Config_Notes/78_6953.html

But, if you have MEM-S2-512MB and not MEM-MSFC2-512MB=, you won't be able to upgrade to get the new IOS installed. ............

What does this mean, as this is now confusing.

My thots were that all I need was MEM-S"-512M but when this was written to me from Cisco, it kind of confused me.

Please help.

Re: Urgent - Which DRAM do I need?

You need the MSFC memory upgrade (MEM-MSFC2-512MB=) because you are running the switch in native mode, not hybrid (switch + router).

In native mode the "switch" is running IOS from the MSFC.

In hybrid mode the sup runs CatOS and the MSFC IOS.

Hope this helps
