Using banner tokens with banner login

Hi,

I am trying to configure new banners for our switches and routers that show up when connecting to the devices using SSH (version 2).

It works well except that I am not able to display banner tokens with the "banner login" command.

To explain what I mean, the following configuration is done on the switch:

banner login '
Login Banner: $(hostname)
'

banner exec '
Exec Banner: $(hostname)
'

banner motd '
Motd Banner: $(hostname)
'

When I connect using SSH I get the following result:

login as: admin

Login Banner: $(hostname)
Using keyboard-interactive authentication.
Password:

Motd Banner: CAT4948

Exec Banner: CAT4948

CAT4948#

As you can see the hostname in the login banner is not translated, but the one in motd and exec is.

This example was taken connecting with PuTTY using SSH version 2 to a Catalyst 4948 running version 12.2(53)SG2.

According to the documentation it looks like it should work also for the login banner:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_2/configfun/command/reference/frf004.html#wp1017507

Do you know what could be the issue and how this could be solved?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,

Harry
