very urgent RIPv1 & RIPv2

Hi Friends,

Can anybody give few difference between Ripv1 & Ripv2.

It is most appreciable.

Major difference

RIPv1 is a classful routing protocol ie. the subnet mask is not transmitted with the routing update. So it does not understand VLSM.

RIPv2 is a classless protocol and does pass the subnet mask with the routing update and hence can support VLSM.

RIPv1 uses broadcasts for routing updates, RIPv2 uses multicast for routing updates.

RIPv2 suppports external route tags. RIPv1 does not.

Hi Naidu,

RIP v2 is an improved version of RIP v1 and *shares* the following features:

It is a distance vector protocol that uses a hop count metric.

It uses holddown timers to prevent routing loops - default is 180 seconds.

It uses split horizon to prevent routing loops.

It uses 16 hops as a metric for infinite distance.

RIP v2 *improved* features:

Transmit subnet mask with route

Provides authentication

Includes next hop route IP address in routing updates

Uses External Route Tags

RIPv1 -

Only Supports classful routing

No subnet info included in routing updates

Does not support VLSM

Broadcasts routing updates

RIPv2 -

Supports both classful and classless routing

Subnet info included in routing updates

Supports VLSM

Multicasts routing updates
