VIP used as gateway on Nexus switch: Can't be used in extended ping?

Hello,

I am troubleshooting an issue about connectivity to a couple boxes.

We have two Nexus switches. From one I can ping the 2 boxes but their MAC address is not shown when I issue "show ip arp [IP_address]".

On the other switch, I see the MAC addresses but cannot ping.

On the switch that ping works, the SVI for the 2 boxes is administratively down (currently investigating the reason why it was disabled). Then the echo requests are being forwarded thru the switch default gateway? Assuming so and to confirm I did a extended ping to one of the boxes, source IP address was the switch default gateway which happens to be a HSRP Virtual Address. Ping succeded, actually it worked when pinging with another ViP as source

On the switch where I can see the servers MAC addresses, I tried the same extended ping (usings the respective default gateway and another ViP), an error message: invalid source address, was returned.

Why this different behavour on 2 peer devices?

Thanks in advance!

Hello David,

We would prob need to do an ELAM on the N7K (assuming this is a 7000) to check the programming via webex. Can you please open a TAC case?
