Virtual Networking UCS/Nexus

Hello,

If I need to move to the virtual section of the forms please let me know. Ill make it short and simple if possible. We have 6 networks 3 for View CLients and 3 for Servers all on a UCS chassis with 2x FI and 2X nexus 5k. This then goes up to a pair of 2960 routers and all of our netwoks gateway's are there for layer 3. We need to use these routers for another project and need to find another layer 3 solution. My question is should/can i use the nexus 5k or a nexus 1kv for layer 3? Which would be better? then only thing that leaves this outside the 5k is View (PCoIP) and Internet traffic.

Please let me know if you need more info.

Thanks

Hi Dennis,

You can easily use the Nexus 5ks as layer-3 devices.  All you have to do is get the layer-3 daughter card and put them in your 5k.  This card gives you up to 160 Gbps of speed, which is a lot faster then your 2960s.

have a look:

Layer 3 Daughter Card and Expansion Module Options for Cisco Nexus 5548P, 5548UP, 5596UP, and 5596T Switches

• In addition to these expansion modules, the Cisco Nexus 5548P and 5548UP support a Layer 3 daughter card that can be ordered with the system or as a spare (field upgradable). This daughter card provides up to 160 Gbps of Layer 3 forwarding capability (240 million packets per second [mpps]) that can be shared by all 48 ports in the chassis. As shown in Figure 7, the Layer 3 daughter card does not take up one of the expansion slots on the rear of the chassis, but instead is installed by replacing the Layer 2 I/O module (N55-DL2) that is located on the front of the chassis.

First of all Reza thank you for your prompte reponse. Second, it seems I will need the Layer 3 license as well, is this true? so 2x cards 2x licenses is looking at 17k, im not sure I can pull that one off. Is the nexus 1kv an option?

Dennis,

The license is included with the hardware:

From the same link:

Requires free of charge a base LAN license (N55-BAS1k9=) to be installed. This is included in the hardware purchase; however the license would need to be manually installed
