vlan carrying over trunk

Hello,

I have a question on following setup. A 6500-B switch connects to existing 6500-A switch. currently, switch A is doing the routing for all the network.

Switch B is newly connected to another location & is linked to switch A.

I have 5 vlans configured on B and are allowed on the trunk link between A&B. there is no default gateway configured on B.what are the results of:

1.if both switches are in transparent vtp mode, will  they be able to pass vlan information to B

2. If switch A is in server mode & B in transparent mode, what will happen

thanks.

Hi,

There is no need of configuring default gateway between A & B.
They just need TCP/IP communication between.
So if you configure you switch A as Server and switch B as client then all vlans will automatically propagate to switch B.
And they both must be in same vtp domain.

Hi,

The answer is a VTP transparent switch does not advertise its VLAN configuration and does not synchronize its VLAN configuration based on received advertisements.

So here if you want all Vlans propagate to switch B then cofnigure this switch as a client as you already have switch A as a server.

Thanks. If A is server & B is configured with no default gateway, will the vlan information travel across and be visible on the cdp table.

The Vlan information will travel as long as the link between A and B is trunk  and both are in the same VTP domain.. it has nothing to do with the default gateway.
