Hey Leo,

Many a good tune out of an old fiddle.

Sanjeev

Here the config guide

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2900xl_3500xl/release12.0_5_wc3/swg/sc.html

These old switches are NOT routers

They only support ONE interface Vlan which is use for management, remote telnet etc.

Alex.

What error message did you get when you tried "no shut" under int vlan 97

Wow.  Your switch is 10 years old and running an equally 10-year-old IOS.

You are getting a layer 2 vlan and a layer 3 svi mixed up .  As previous poster  said this is a layer 2 switch only so the only reason to have an  SVI defined is to manage the switch.  I'm  assuming it already  has a l3 SVI to manage it so I would leave that alone and delete  the  layer 3 svi for vlan 97.   Seeing that there are so many vlans on the switch that means you have a trunked link somewhere to the L3 device which does the routing .  You already have a L2 vlan defined for vlan 97 as shown in the show vlan command so you  should be set to go .  If you need routing for this subnet it is done on another device that is attached via a trunk .

Thanks All for the clear Information. Need some replacement.
