VLAN information not propagate

Hi guys,

I have problem propagating the VLAN information although the VTP domain and password is the same for both switches..

I can propogate the VLAN no but not the description or the name of the VLAN meaning the Configuration changes didn't reflect on the other switch.

SWITCH A - VTP SERVER

CONFIGURATION is 17

Switch B - VTP CLient

Configuration is 16

NEed your assistance..

thanks!

Re: VLAN information not propagate

The VTP configuration number is close. When you made change was it the same revision maybe? How about if you change name again does it propagate?

Are there any other switches in the VTP domain that may have higher revision #?

Re: VLAN information not propagate

Hi Ken,

there are many possibilites that can cause this behaviour.

One common is that a used switch is inserte into a new domain and the revision couter was not reset.

Have a look into this very nice document about VTP including troubleshooting and configuration examples:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk689/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094c52.shtml#reset

I hope that helps.

Best regards,

Frank

ken

pls check ur:

vtp domain (they must be in the same domain)

vtp password(if any)(they must have the same password)

and the configuration revision of the vlan (the highest revision will be the one used to propagate to all the switches, even if it runs VTP Client mode)

Switch#show vtp status

VTP Version : 2

Configuration Revision : 7

Maximum VLANs supported locally : 250

Number of existing VLANs : 9

VTP Operating Mode : Server

VTP Domain Name : cisco

VTP Pruning Mode : Disabled

VTP V2 Mode : Disabled

VTP Traps Generation : Disabled

MD5 digest : 0xEF 0x38 0x98 0x82 0x1D 0xFE 0xC5 0x5F

Configuration last modified by 0.0.0.0 at 3-1-93 00:31:33

Local updater ID is 125.252.66.194 on interface Vl1 (lowest numbered VLAN interf

hope this helps

Re: VLAN information not propagate

Hello,

Please check that the link between the two swithces is TRUNK, the domain name are the same (case sensitive) if all OK, remove the VTP password for test and after publish your results.

Re: VLAN information not propagate

Hi FCS,

do you mean that to remove the VTP password and put a new password in or totally go without password?

The domain name is the same (case-sensitive)

thks,

ken

Re: VLAN information not propagate

I mean to totally remove for test purpose, and maybe it will work without password...

This is just a troubleshooting idea...

Re: VLAN information not propagate

FCS, not working..:(

The Vlan number is the same ..but the description name is not propagated..

I am really loss of ideas.....

Re: VLAN information not propagate

For troubleshooting purposes, try adding a "dummy" vlan on your VTP server and see if it propagates throughout your fabric.

If not, then you have a switch somewhere in your VTP domain with a higher revision number.

Re: VLAN information not propagate

i tried to add a dummy..but not happening also..

i am suspecting on the trunk port..

My trunk port configure as

switchport mode trunk, that is sufficient rite?

Anymore things to add?

Re: VLAN information not propagate

Hi,

Please send the output of show vtp status. I am affraid about the VTP version (but it should be synchronized by server).

Maybe there is version mismatch...

Re: VLAN information not propagate

OK,

Anyway the link is OK between the two devices?

Layer1 is OK? (I hope not a cable problem) Is this part of xour production environment?

Re: VLAN information not propagate

check everything...get your trunk up first before setting up the vtp part of it. Check your trunk mode & encapsulation, etc. the stat your trunk to make sure its active.

Re: VLAN information not propagate

I have the same question ,VTP domain and password is the same

SWITCH A - VTP SERVER

cisco WS-C4506

ROM: 12.2(20r)EW1

Switch B - VTP server
