Voice Recording

Our network uses VLAN 2 for data and VLAN 700 for IPT. Anyway we use the NICE voice recording system to record telephone calls.

We can record calls that are made by standard Cisco 7940 phones but we also use Cisco softphones that are installed on a PC and we are unable to record these.

The NICE recording people say this is because of the way the switches are setup? Anyone any idea were we need to look or why this might not work?

Re: Voice Recording

Yes, normally you have two VLANs, like you mentioned.

But on PC, the DATA Vlan is used for voice. NICE records calls by using Spanning session (monitor session). They sniff out voice communication and based on JTAPI select which streams to record.

But if they span data VLAN, they probably would have problems interpretting all the data.

I can see two solutions:

1. Separate data and voice in data vlan, and then send only voice traffic to span port.

2. Pressure NICE to be able to monitor data vlan, and recognize voice streams.

Re: Voice Recording

thanks for the quick reply - we will probably do option 2 but do you know how you would do option 1?

Re: Voice Recording

The problem is that on the PC you have only one harware NIC for two kinds of trafic. You cannot tag your softphone's voice so my point of view is it's impossible to separate data and voice.

As said, span the data Vlan but you'll generate huge trafic for maybe a few voice streams...
