Voice VLAN on 2900XL switch questions

I am having problems getting an IP telephone to obtain a DHCP address with a 2900XL switch (Version 12.0(5.2)XU)

data vlan =1

voice vlan = 32

I configure the port

>>switchport voice vlan 31

>>switchport access vlan 1

A pc connected off the phone gets the proper DHCP address - but the IP telephone does not receive dhcp address.

I change the config and only connect a PC

>>switchp access vlan 31

plug the PC in and it gets proper vlan 31 dhcp

plug the IP phone in and it does not get dhcp address.

this works fine on 2950, 2960, 4506 switches - 1st time I have tried on a 2900XL - am I missing something?

Hi Friend,

This config will not work on 2900XL/3500XL switches. You have to configure the switch ports as trunk ports. Do the following:

Int fa 0/1

Switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

switchport mode trunk

This has to be in case of older 2900XL/3500Xl switches. On the new switches you have to do the same config as you have tried above
