VSS cat6500 (two sup & 4x10ge)

Hello!

Is it real now to use two VSS 6500 in cluster  with two sup720-10ge connected to each other by 4 x 10ge?

Or we can only use 1 sup with 2x10ge to make VSS?

I  can't find any info about it on cisco.com

thanks

VSS doesn't support dual SUP in each chassis right now.

High-availability considerations: To maintain high availability of the attached devices, we recommend that the device be dual attached to both VSS members. Singly attached devices are supported but will lose connectivity when the switch to which they are attached fails. In the initial release of software, only a single supervisor per chassis is supported. Dual supervisor per VSS member is planned for future software release

Re: VSS cat6500 (two sup & 4x10ge)

Hello Valery,

only WS-6708 and WS-6716 can be used to build the VSS link.

the WS-6704 misses a chip to encapsulates frames in the VS protocol

see

The VSL EtherChannel supports only 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports. The 10-Gigabit Ethernet port can be located on the supervisor engine module or on one of the following switching modules:

WS-X6708-10GE-3C or WS-X6708-10GE-3CXL

WS-X6716-10GE-3C or WS-X6716-10GE-3CXL

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/vss.html#wp1053927

Apart from this limitation building a VSS with 4 10GE should be possible.

As fas as I understand if you use BFD or fast hellos for dual active detection you should be able to use simple direct GE links between the two chassis.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/configuration/guide/vss.html#wp1090844

the reported example uses simple Ge ports for BFD detection, the same happens on the example using fast hellos.

It has been suggested to implement multiple methods for dual active detection.

So using 4 10 GE for the VSS bundle is feasible.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Re: VSS cat6500 (two sup & 4x10ge)

I don't want to use any 10gig cards, except of sup-720-10ge with embedded 10ge ports. And don't use 1ge between chassis.

scheme like cat6500#1(sup720-10g)-------2x10GE-------cat6500#2(sup720-10g) works fine. bit if supervisor dead, one chassis is dead.

need to reserve each supervisor on each chassis with 4x10ge links.

You don't need to have 4x10gig links.  No matter how many 10Gig you have, when the Sup is dead the whole box is dead.

The VS Sup comes only with 2 10Gig ports
