Dear Sir,

I have got some problem with cisco 2950 swith. I have configured a vtp domain with 3 switches. show vtp status showing that it support max vlan 64. But I need more than that. even 200. I can't add any more vlan in the main switch. What to do. Should I change the switch. Or there is no other way to add vlan beyond 64 with 2950.

Ok I have to ask why do you need more 64 vlans on a maximum 48 port switch ???

Table 8-1 Maximum Number of Supported VLANs

Catalyst 2950-24

I thought the 2950-12 and 2950-24 were allowed more that 64 VLANs in their database, but just not more than 64 instances of Spanning Tree. So you are only allowed ports that are active for 64 VLANs.

The only reason you might want to go beyond 64 is if you are using it as a transit, which is unusual for a 2950.

The best way to deal with this is to restrict the VLANs allowed on the trunks, so that they only allow the VLANs actually needed by the switch. That is good practice anyway. Then you will only have instances of Spanning Tree for the VLANs that actually come into the box.

Kevin is correct thats not a good design at all if you are using it as a transit switch for the rest of the network with that many vlans defined . That would be the only reason I could possibly think of as to why you would need even 64 vlans on a single 2950.
