VTP Default Version, Cisco says V1, I see Ver 2

I am studying for my 642-811 test. In both the BCMSN book (page 167) and all over the cisco site it says VTP version 2 is disabled by default and VTP ver 1 and 2 are incompatable.

However, in every switch I have been in this past week I show VTP Version 2 is on by default.

Can someone please help me understand.

Re: VTP Default Version, Cisco says V1, I see Ver 2

John,

The line "VTP Version : 2" simply means that the switch is capable of doing VTP Version 2. This does not mean that VTP V2 is enabled.

If you look through the complete output of "show vtp status", this will tell you whether you have VTP V2 enabled or not.

For example, in the below output the switch is capable of doing VTP V2 but is not configured for V2. "VTP V2 Mode: Disabled"

VTP Version : 2

Configuration Revision : 2

Maximum VLANs supported locally : 250

Number of existing VLANs : 5

VTP Operating Mode : Server

VTP Domain Name :

VTP Pruning Mode : Disabled

VTP V2 Mode : Disabled

VTP Traps Generation : Disabled

I hope it clarifies your doubt.

Regards,

Arul

Yes it does, thank you!

Not how I would have written the code but with your help I follow, thanks

It is correct... the VTP you are seeing is Ver 2 CAPABLE, if you do a show vtp status you'll see a VTP V2 Mode entry that is disabled by default.

So, you can turn on version 2 if you like, but you have to enable it from the default
