VTP Transparent mode

I dont know how to make use of VTP Transparent swith.Where can we use this transparent mode switch???

Re: VTP Transparent mode

VTP transparent mode means that u can create.delete, modify vlans locally on the switch.its changes are not propogated to other switches and it doesnt updates its database from the updates recieved from other switches.

It depends upon u r requirement and scenario where u can use this mode.

Re: VTP Transparent mode

Number of reasons why you might want to use VTP transparent

1) Security. You may not want a change on one switch to update the vlan database on another.

2) Misconfiguration. There is a chance that if you introduce a new switch with a higher revision number but a blank vlan database to your existing VTP domain it could wipe all the vlan databases off your existing switches. VTP transparent would prevent this.

3) If you want to use the extended vlan range ie. up to 4096 the switch must be in VTP transparent mode.

4) Private vlans require the switch to be in VTP transparent mode.

Others may add more.

Re: VTP Transparent mode

Hi Ahmed,

You would use a transparent switch in case this switch is connected between a VTP server and VTP client switch and you do not want the all the VLANs to be available on this intermediate Transparent switch. Thus this switch would have its own VLAN configuration which would not affect any other switch + this switche's configuration won't be affected by the VTP server switch + it will act as a proxy to forward the VTP updates to the VTP clients, in case VTP clients don't have direct connectivity to the VTP server.
