What do manufactures of switches state higher mpps/Gbs switching fabric when compared to cisco?

Hi all,

I have a question that I have always wanted to know, why is it that  manufactures such as HP, Dell, Extreme Networks, 3com – they all list  similar products with a much higher switching fabirc and mpps when  compared to Cisco? Are the other manufactures reporting correct  information or is it like a trick to decieve you (like speakers when  they state Max Watts instead of TRUE RMS?)

Thanks in advance

Re: What do manufactures of switches state higher mpps/Gbs switc

Hello Matt,

all vendors usually count twice the speed of their products (tx+rx) this is done also by Cisco.

Some may count tx and rx packets at the external ports and tx and rx packets towards the backplane/switching fabric.

see this document on network world about "vendor math"

from a technical point of view whar counts is to have a non blocking switching fabric.

Also there are other aspects to be considered:

QoS toolset, support of multicast traffic and so on.

Hope to help
