Which IOS image to choose for 7206VXR/NPE-G2

Hi,

I've just logged on to the cisco site to download an image for my new router it's a 7206VXR/NPE-G2 (never used this before). On teh Cisco download page I'm offered multiple choices:

Channel Port Adapter (CPA) Microcode
IOS Boot Images
IOS Field Programmable Devices
IOS Software
Protocol Description Language Module (PDLM) Software

My question is what exactly do I need to download and what is the difference between each especially between "IOS Boot Images" and "IOS Software".

Thanks

Dan

Hi,

You have to go to IOS images, there you can download the respective IOS for your router.Based on your requirement you can download the respective IOS from cisco portal..

IOS boot image already will be there in your router, this will help to load the necessary IOS on your router.

If you have multiple IOS images in your flash , then you need to set the boot sequence in boot image, that wull help the router which IOS should load ,and if that fails then it has to load from second IOS.

IOS is the main image where we can do all the networking futures . Boot image is the file that will help the router to know , from which IOS it has to come up.

Re: Which IOS image to choose for 7206VXR/NPE-G2

Hello Dan,

boot images are boot loaders :

the system starts by loading rommon, that then load the boot image that is subset of IOS

The boot image then loads the full IOS image

about both boot images and full IOS images be aware that there are images specific for this type of processors NPE-G1 and NPE-G2

An example of full IOS image is :

c7200p-advsecurityk9-mz.124-20.T.bin

sh ver | inc image
System image file is "disk2:c7200p-advsecurityk9-mz.124-20.T.bin"

images starting with C7200p* are the right ones

sh ver | inc NPE
Cisco 7206VXR (NPE-G2) processor (revision A) with 917504K/65536K bytes of memory.

Edit:

not recommended but sh ver shows

sh ver

BOOTLDR: Cisco IOS Software, 7200 Software (C7200P-KBOOT-M), Version 12.4(15)T6, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

the boot loader is the boot image that in this case is a little older then main IOS image.

Usually Cisco recommends to have the same.

Hope to help

Hi.

Thanks for that. What about the other sections what are they for? Do I need to be concerned by them?

Thanks

Hi Dan,

Follow this document on how to upgrade your router.  Make sure you have enough memory (256MB) and flash (128Mb) installed in your router if you are upgradeing to IOS 15.

Thanks for that.

I tried booting  but I got the following error:

Error : compressed image checksum is incorrect 0x3587170F
        Expected a checksum of 0xA17ACCD2

*** System received a Software forced crash ***

Readonly ROMMON initialized
string is disk2:c7200p-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T2.bin

And I can see:

BOOT variable = c7200p-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T2.bin,1;
CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
BOOTLDR variable = bootflash:c7200p-kboot-mz.124-24.T2.bin
WARM_REBOOT variable = FALSE
Configuration register is 0x2102

How can I verify a checksum after I upload it via tftp?

Thanks

Re: Which IOS image to choose for 7206VXR/NPE-G2

Hi,

With the following:

sh bootvar
BOOT variable = c7200p-adventerprisek9-mz.124-24.T2.bin,1;
CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist
BOOTLDR variable = bootflash:c7200p-kboot-mz.124-24.T2.bin
WARM_REBOOT variable = FALSE
Configuration register is 0x2102

Why is the BOOTLDR and BOOT variables different?

The BOOTLDR is the correct one so how do I change the BOOT variable?

Thanks

Re: Which IOS image to choose for 7206VXR/NPE-G2

Dan,

Ok so if the  BOOTLDR is the correct, then at the prompt type this command:

boot bootflash:c7200p-kboot-mz.124-24.T2.bin

and see if it boots correctly
