Which switch gives me the maximum number of SFP ports in a 1U package?

I've filled up our existing fiber switch and need to add more devices using fiber. My cabinet is out of room to expand by ading more switches. So I must replace the existing 12 port switch with a new one. My needs are only for 1Gbps per port. I'm looking for the maximum density that I can get in a 1U package. Which switch would fit this need?

1 RU,

then you are looking for the

Cisco Catalyst 3750G-12S-12 Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports

Other option, not sure if it helps since it's not SFP based (well just one port)

Cisco Catalyst 2960G-8TC-L

8 Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports, 1 of which is dual-purpose; compact size with no fan

Hi Chuck,

In addition to Jorge's post, how about the WS-C3560E-12D or WS-C3560E-12SD.

The former can support 12 x 10Gb X2-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports and also TwinGig Adapter Converting 10 Gigabit Ethernet X2 Interface into 1Gb SFP.

The latter can support 12 SFP based Gigabit Ethernet ports + 2 X2-based 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Cisco Catalyst 3560-E Series Switches

Hope this helps.

I believe the highest density for fiber gig in a 1 RU device, is the already described (by Leo) 3560E-12D using twin gig converters in its 10 gig module slots. This would provide 24 SFP ports, but likely at high cost.

If, however, you have some space in an ajoining cabinet, you can "stack" a 1 RU 3750G-12S (as noted in Jorge's post) in the original cabinet with one or more additional 3750s in the adjoining cabinet. They will function as one device and pass data between them using the high speed stack cables.

You can try the Catalyst 4928, it has 24 SFP fiber ports and 2x TwinGig (+4 SFP fiber) where it will give you total 28 SFP fiber ports max in a 1RU factor.

HTH,

jerry

That's the one for me Jerry! I knew that there had to be more than 8 or 12 ports in a switch that I could use. This switch with 28 SFP ports this will exceed my needs. Thank-you for this recommendation.

This is one hell of an expensive switch , compared to WS-C3560E-12D-E, which has only 4 SFP interfaces less (24 compared to 28). Ok, backplane may not be as powerfull, but still large difference, i feel (nearly 50%)
