WS-C2960S-24PS-L not detecting Nortel i2002 POE phone

Hello,

I powered a Notel i2002 phone with a SG300-10MP POE switch, it automatically detects the phone (which has a POE splitter on it, PD-PS-402)

When I connect the extact setup to the 2960, it does not detect and turn on the POE for the phone to power on.

I have tried static power, max and it still does not detect.

Are there any commands that will turn the POE ON instead of being on auto detect?

1.  Please post the output to the command "sh power inline".

2.  Next, do the following commands according to their order:

a.  Command:  test cable tdr interface ;

b.  Wait for approximately 5 to 7 seconds;

c.  Command:  sh cable tdr interface ; and

d.  Post the output to "c".

Pair C     32   +/- 1  meters Pair C      Short

This is your answer.

TDR test has shown that Pair C, the pair responsible for PoE, is not terminated properly.

Pair D, controls GigabitEthernet, is also not terminated properly.

The "fault" is estimated to be around 32 metres away from the switch port.

Re: WS-C2960S-24PS-L not detecting Nortel i2002 POE phone

Thanks for assisting so far Leo. I have the same issue when the phone is plugged in with a different cable directly to the switch. I'm unable to move the phone now and plug it in, (ran command remotely). Will run the command again tomorrow when I plug it in with another cable.

Any other diagnostics?

I have the same issue when the phone is plugged in with a different cable directly to the switch.

Connect the phone DIRECTLY to the switch using the same cable that's currently connected to the switchport.

Ran test again.

Interface Speed Local pair Pair length        Remote pair Pair status

--------- ----- ---------- ------------------ ----------- --------------------

Gi1/0/10  auto  Pair A     1    +/- 0  meters Pair B      Normal

                Pair B     1    +/- 0  meters Pair A      Normal

                Pair C     0    +/- 1  meters Pair C      Short

                Pair D     1    +/- 1  meters Pair D      Short

The same cable works and powers the phone from the SG300-10MP POE.

What do you get when you run the command "sh power in G1/0/10"?

Are there specific types of POE that work with the SG300 and not the 2960?

Your "sh power inline" output confirms you have a cable issue.

Can you change the patch cable and try again?

Regarding the patch cable, another patch and another phone still did not work with the Cisco 2960. But with the SG300 they power on. Same patch cable, same phone, same splitter.

Hi Shiva

I think the problem is, that the PoE Splitter you use is a passive device... This splitter just use the PoE power from the pins 7/8 of the patch cord and this is not supported by your Cisco 2960. Your Switch uses the other way of PoE: induced voltage on pins 1/2 and 3/6.. and for this kind of PoE you will need a active PoE Splitter.

I have the same issue at a customer site and found no solution to solve the problem.

Ok so an SG300 supports this POE power on pins 7/8. Is there a name or type for this kind of POE? I would need to ensure what ever I get to replace the 2960 would have the required functionality.

Please see this for detailed information:

http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Cisco+POE

All you need is a cisco Switch that support Cisco pre-standard (legacy) PoE.

But... Output of Q&A from the Cisco Website

Q, Can a Cisco switch be forced to provide pre-standard PoE an 802.3af compliant IP phone?

A. There is no way to force the switch to provide pre-standard PoE,       because the power allocation is done automatically through negotiation.

Cisco switches with PoE capability automatically supply power to       connected pre-standard powered devices, such as Cisco IP phones and Cisco       Aironet access points, and to IEEE 802.3af-compliant powered devices if the       switch senses that there is no power on the circuit. This means the switch       supplies power to any non-Cisco device that does not have Cisco Discovery       Protocol (CDP), as long as it is an IEEE 802.3af-compliant powered       device.

In conclusion, Cisco pre-standard PoE devices and 802.3af-compliant       devices work accordingly, and the switch cannot provide either pre-standard PoE       to an 802.3af device or 802.3af power to a Cisco pre-standard device.
