WS-C4507R-E Question

I have 2 C4507R-E with Sup V-10GE running 12.2(40)SG and I need to know if I can use the 10GB 12-port or 6-port line cards with what I have now or do I need to upgrade the supervisor modules?

According to the datasheet

for 6 port 10gig you need:

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(40)SG or later

as for 12 port 10Gig you need:

WS-X4712-SFP+E is not supported on 4507R-E and 4510R-E chassis

It also says that I cannot use the Sup V-10GE supervisor card and I need to upgrade to either supervisor 6-e or supervisor 7-e. Is this correct?

correct, you have to use the 6 port 10Gig.

I am confused....you are saying I can use the 6-port 10gb line card with the sup v-10ge that I have? This is what the document says:

Cisco  Catalyst 4500 46xx E-Series Line Cards

24 Gbps

Cisco Catalyst 4503-E,  4506-E, 4507R-E, 4507R+E, 4510R-E, and 4510R+E2

Supervisor Engine 7-E, Supervisor Engine 6-E, Supervisor Engine 6L-E

Not sure what the confusion is as your table clearly shows -

46xx cards are supported on Sup6 or sup7

47xx cards need sup7

So your SupV-01GE will not support any of the above cards.

Why do you want to do that?  The 4500E chassis can't really support "full" 10Gb because the each line card slot can support up to 24Gb, half duplex.  Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo putting a 12-port 10Gb card would be a waste of good money.

You need to be careful when you present that.

Currently the 6500 with a sup720 can support up to 40Gbps per slot. The 4500 with the right chassis/supervisor/linecards can actually support up to 48Gbps per slot so in pure performance terms the 4500 can currently support more throughput per slot.

There is a new sup for the 6500 due out next year which will increase slot capacity and there are more reasons that slot capacity for going with the 6500 but if you truly need 10Gbps connectivity and that is the most important criteria then that is what the Nexus switches are designed for. I'm not suggesting you need Nexus but just wanted to make you aware of what is currently available.

Yes, as Jon noted there is new sup due out in 2nd quarter of 2011.  It is called Sup 2T. It will have 2 40Gig ports on the Sup and the backplane capacity per slot will go up to 80Gig, but as usual there are some caveats.
