MPLS switching on GE

hi to all,

a customer is asking about a platform being able to support switching on Giga Ethernet and also L2 and L3 VPN MPLS based.

I think one solution may be using a Catalyst 650x with supervisor 2 (MSFC 2) and a OSM with some GBic module. I may also use the newer supervisor 720.

The question is: is the OSM the only module supporting MPLS on GE for Catalyst 6500 family, or with Supervisor 720 is possible to use also a "simple" Giga module, like in exemple WS-X6816-GBIC?

I did not find anything about the support of MPLS on that kind of module.

As far as I know, MPLS VPN was not supported on WS-X6816-GBIC, till last year. I am not sure of the basic MPLS support though.

With Sup2/MSFC2/PFC2, you need an OSM to support

MPLS (a 7600 is basically a 6500 with Sup2/Msfc2/PFC2

and at least one OSM).

With Sup720, you're supposed to be able to use the

"classical" GE modules (eg. 6516/6816). However, as

far as I know the IOS version to do this is not

available yet (even if the Sup720 is).

my customer have Sup2/MSFC2/PFC2 cards and one OSM-4GE-WAN module,but we use the CATALYST 3550 as the CE and connect to CATALSYT 6509 with the WS-X6348-RJ-45 module. Can you tell me how to config them to support L3 MPLS in detail?

Based on the feature navigator, supervisor 720 does support MPLS and MPLT TE. However, the supported hardware is very limited now. If I remember correctly, only 10G module is the valid choice. All other are not listed to work with supervisor 720.

Sup 720 support MPLS on all modules but does not support VPLS but SUP720-3xbl can support MPLS and VPLS with high MPLS and VPLS Throughput.

HI Alberto,

I suggest you use SUP720BXL engine,

because we used before SUP2, and Cisco has

stopped development or freeze the features further,

for OSM module..

like MPLS with Multicast support, it not going

to work if you have OSM module..

We had to upgrade our equipment to get our 650x,

To get the Multicast support.
