Anything less than a 2800 series (I left out the 2600s as they are end-of-sale/end-of-life) will only support vrf-lite (not full MPLS). Advanced IP or IP plus image should support this feature. Also, your P routers do not have to run BGP, only your PE routers.

Feature navigator is a nice tool, but it's kind of 'buggy'. Some features marked 'supported' for hardware can be NOT SUPPORTED in real life.

So the best solution is to check it yourself by configuring gear or ask/check people who did it.

Yes you can use feature navigator to successfully check the MPLS feature support in an IOS and then you can download that IOS release for your specific hardware.

Now Feature Navigator isnt buggy,(by the way long back even I used to think the same ;-))

What you experienced may happen when you check the compatibility of an IOS with the chassis hardware for a feature. But where you are configuring that feature that specific module might not support that feature. Since the Chassis is completely modular, and so is the IOS in terms of features, you need to check form all sides when doing a compatibility check.

For eg: you have download an IOS for 7600 which supports ATMoMPLS Cell relay, now if you expect it to work on your ATM PA. it wont. As existing PA-A3 or PA-A6 wont support cell relay. You will need SIP/SPA for that to work. Now same is the case with VPLS you IOS may support it but if you dont have OSM/SIP-SPA it wont.
