MPLS Vs Point to Point

What are the advantage of using MPLS Vs. Point to Point circuits? I know MPLS offers a Mesh. Are there any other major advantages of using MPLS.

Is QoS better on a MPLS vs Point to Point? It appears to be no difference to me because QoS would just be configured on the router interfaces of a point to point circuit.

All responses are greatly appreciated. Thank You

Hi,

The answer depends on your requirements.

QoS (here: queueing) is a per interface feature and the encapsulation does not change much. The methods will also be the same (LLQ/CBWFQ).

A MPLS VPN solution offers some advantages, when connectivity between many sites is required AND many customers with overlapping IP addresses are present.

It allows a SP to setup a shared backbone resulting in lower costs per customer.

Depending on your requirements either solution could be best for your network.

Regards, Martin

Hi friends,

Adding few pts to the discussion -

While MPLS facilitates any to any communication across sites of organizations (Multipoint communication) , leased line is a dedicated and high speed connectivity built across two sites(Point to Point communication). Leased lines do not share the connectivity with any other customer and we get symmetric speed in both directions.

Leased lines is an older technology than MPLS and has been around a bit longer.

Below link enumerates details comparison between both the terms -
