MR-APS with ATW PW

Hi,

Is it possible to use Multi Router-APS functionality with ATM PW ?

CE is dual homed to 2 PE's and using ATM PW.

Could some one let us know which release supports MR-APS functionality with ATM PW?

Thanks

Re: MR-APS with ATW PW

Hi,

Automated Protection Switching (APS) is a technology used with Multiplexers - see f.e. "Multirouter APS for the Cisco 12000 Series ISE ATM Line Cards" at

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1829/products_feature_guide09186a00803320b1.html

So it does not directly relate to MPLS AtoM. What exactly are you looking for? APS can give you redundancy for the optical path.

Are you looking for redundancy of the optical path between PEs and CE?

Are you looking for PE redundancy offering ATM PW?

Is the ATM PW connecting CE and PEs or is the ATM PW service offered through the PEs and the CE connects through an optical network?

Can you please highlight the situation a bit more ...

Re: MR-APS with ATW PW

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply. I am looking for ATM PW redundancy. Can it be achieved using MR-APS.

CE1 is dual homed to two PE'S. if first PE's fails , CE switch to second PE.

Is it possible or not ?

Thanks

Re: MR-APS with ATW PW

Hi,

what you presumably are looking for is "L2VPN Pseudowire Redundancy" found at

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1829/products_feature_guide09186a0080606811.html

Hope this helps! please rate all posts.

Re: MR-APS with ATW PW

Martin,

In attached pdf figure 4, can CE2a and CE2b run MR-APS ?

How CE2b knows that CE2a has failed ?

Thanks

Re: MR-APS with ATW PW

Satish, to add more here,

You want redundancy towards your PE, and you would have a dual homed CE, so the CE2a and CE2b is not applicable in your scenario.

Now MR-APS and PW redundancy are two different and independent features.

1) For the PW redundancy to work it requires two physical interfaces where it

can do the PW label imposition. Of the two one PW is primary and the other

is a pure backup.

2) In MR-APS it providing a feature to take advantage of the APS feature built into

carrier systems. where in the similar configuration which resides on the primary

interface can be used on the secondary interface, so that when due to failure

when your MUX switches over the path to the protected path, the protect interface on

your side should have the same configuration so that it can swicth the data to the

same remote side.

3) Now when you want to club these features together, you can use both the interfaces

on the PE side one as primary for APS which is also the primary for PW in terms

of configuration. And the secondary for APS would be the secondary for your PW as well.

4) You need to be careful of the Holdtime configured for APS and Backup-Delay for PW Redundancy.

The holdtime for APS should be lower than the PW Backup-Delay.

5) Now I believe why this will work is the APS switchover to the protected interface happens

based on SDH/SONET signalling which is transparent to the PW, and is interpreted by the PE edge

device and is not transported across the PW. So upon the receipt of the alarms the APS switchover

is done on the configured hello/holdtime. And then your PW redundancy should kickin and enable the

backup PW. By the time which the protected interface would be up and your PW should be fucntionaly.

Do try it out and post the results back.

Did u get a chance to try it out?

Re: MR-APS with ATW PW

Hi,

No ,I don't have equipment to try it out. Do somebody know if some one is using MR-APS and PW redundency together ?

Thanks
