Problems with Converge Times between BGP and IS-IS

Hello together,

in our MPLS Core we use IS-IS as Routing Protocol between P- and PE- Router. And we use mBGP for VPN based Routing (vrf) between the PE Routers.

At the begining everything works fine. But now it seems that the convergence times between IS-IS and BGP has increased.

e.g. when a link in the core fails than it took more then 5 minutes till the BGP Neighbours are reestablished again. Within the 5 minutes the ip connectivity is there but is not proper propagated withinh IS-IS.

Are the there any configurations issues (e.g. timers)to optimize the behavior between IS-IS and BGP ?

Thanks in advance for an response.

Re: Problems with Converge Times between BGP and IS-IS

Hello,

On he BGP side you can reduce the keepalive from the default of 60 seconds to for example 15 seconds. I would keep the holdtime at 3x this. This will save you about one minute.

e.g.

router bgp 1

timers bgp 15 45

You can gain another minute by reducing the BGP scan time with,

router bgp 1

bgp scan-time 10

Regards

Ian
