Catalyst 6500 series switches that run Cisco IOS fails to boot with the "%SYSTEM-1-INITFAIL: Network boot is not supported" error message

Core issue

The switch boot goes into ROMmon mode and sometimes can go into a continuous boot loop with this error message:

Self decompressing the image : #################################################
#################################################
##########################
################################### [OK]

%SYSTEM-1-INITFAIL: Network boot is not supported.

This can be caused due to  this reason:

  • The boot variables are not set correctly to boot the switch from a valid software image.

  • The software image in the Flash memory is missing or corrupted, or there is a software upgrade failure.

Resolution

Complete these steps in order to resolve this issue:

  1. Check the boot variable that points to the valid software image.

  2. If the boot variable is correct and the manual boot fails again, then perform a software recovery procedure.

Refer to Supervisor Engine module does not come online due to continuous booting loop, invalid boot variable, incorrect configuration register setting or corrupt image for more information.
