CiscoWorks reports a Port HighDiscardRate message for gigabit ports on the Cisco Catalyst switches

Core issue

This issue is due to one of these situations:

  • The input packet queued rate is greater than the minimum packet rate, and the input packet discard percentage is greater than the discard threshold.

The input packet queued rate is the rate of packets received without error. The input packet discard percentage is calculated by dividing the rate of input packets discarded by the rate of packets received.

  • The output packet queued rate is greater than the minimum packet rate, and the output packet discard percentage is greater than the discard threshold.

The output packet queued rate is the rate of packets sent without error. The output packet discard percentage is calculated by dividing the rate of output packets discarded by the rate of packets sent.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, determine the threshold on the CiscoWorks Device Fault Manager (DFM). It can be set too low or too high, and cause alarms.

To check the thresholds in DFM, perform these steps:

  1. Select Administration console > Edit > Polling and Thresholds.

A Polling and Threshold window opens.

  2. Select the Threshold tab located at the bottom left of that window.

  3. Expand DFM on the left pane and select the router.

  4. Select the appropriate group for Interface Groups, and click on the entries under that group one by one.

  5. Check the threshold values set for various events on the right-hand side.

Make sure the thresholds are appropriately set for the router, based on the network conditions.

  6. If the alarm continues to come up, set a filter in the DFM to determine if it is a device failure.

To set up a filter, refer to the Customizing the Alarm Log View with Filters section of Common Monitoring Console Tasks.
