Content Switching Module (CSM) resets with the %C6KPWR-SP-4-DISABLED: power to module in slot [dec] set [chars] error message in the Catalyst 6500 Switch

Core issue

This error means that the module in the indicated slot was powered off for the reason stated in the error message.

For example, this error message indicates that the source is a switch processor (SP) and the condition occurred in the SP on the module in slot 9:

%C6KPWR-SP-4-DISABLED: power to module in slot 9 set off (Module not responding to Keep Alive polling)

This happens when the CSM does not respond to keepalives from the Supervisor and the Supervisor is designed to reset a module if it does stop responding to keepalives.

There are two bugs reported on this issue:

Under load, the CSM may drop or not respond to Internet Cache Protocol (ICP) keepalives, which results in erroneous slot reloads. ICP keepalives are sent every two seconds and are considered failed if three are missed. ICP keepalives are not user configurabl

Resolution

Cisco is looking into increasing the frequency or timeout timers to improve the situation. As a workaround, the CSM code can be upgraded to the latest 4.1(7) version so that the keepalive process has a higher Serial Control Protocol (SCP) priority on the CSM.

The latest CSM code can be downloaded from the Cisco Catalyst 6000 Content Switching Module software download page.
