Fast memory is low on a Cisco 7500 Series Router

Core Issue

The fast memory shown in the show memory [summary] command output appears low on free memory, as shown in the following example:

GHQ52#show memory summary
                        Head       Total(b)      Used(b)    Free(b)   Lowest(b)  Largest(b)
Processor               60F74EE0   17346848      9203984    8142864   8010664    7864900
Fast                    60F54EE0    131072       130936     136       136        92

Resolution

No action is required in this situation because it is designed to operate this way.

The fast memory is a small amount (128k) of processor memory that has been set aside for use by hardware Interface Descriptor Blocks (IDBs). Should the router run out of fast memory, it will take memory from the regular processor memory pool.
